Chilling in the Philippines--4 weeks in!

September 25, 2013

Ok... Time to fire back up the blog.  We have been here 4 weeks now. Although I have posted some day to day musings on Facebook and twitter, I thought it would be good to give an overview on here.  If anyone has specific questions on things I may not have covered, feel free to ask. I will respond and cover them in future blogs.

Flight--
Our flight was broken up in 3 segments. DSM to Minneapolis, Minneapolis to Tokyo and Tokyo to Manila. The first one was a bumpy, cramped ride. In minneapolis the train was broken so we had to go all the way to the other side of the airport by foot.  I was having flashbacks to a scramble Paxton bennett and I had to do there back in 05.  At least this time, we had a couple hours.  The flight to Tokyo was 12 hours-- smooth flight-- We were served a couple meals. I watched The movie 42 about Jackie Robinson (it was good, although not much new information) and then the first 3 die hards. Next thing ya know, we are in Tokyo!
We had a 45 minute layover in tokyo and had to go through full security. We did not get much time to see anything. Then it was on board for a 4 hour trip to Manila.  Vince rode with us the whole time.  He was really good for the most part being his first time flying and he had to hold it for almost a day.  We left Des moines at 1 pm Monday and got into Manila at 11PM Tuesday. That was weird.

Time difference--
13 hours ahead of CST.  So its like 1130 Wednesday morning here as I write. back home its 1030 Tuesday night.

Eastwood City--
We Live in a planned subdivision of Quezon City. Quezon City is part of what is called Metro manila. Quezon City has a population of 3 million of the approximate 13 million in Metro Manila. This is the most densely populated place in the world. People are everywhere. all times of day. Eastwood City is kind of like a West Glen in West Des Moines... Only 10 times more people in half the space. instead of 3 story buildings, there are 30 story buildings.  Our Building, Eastwood Park Residences, is right above Eastwood mall.  Eastwood mall isn't huge-- but has 4 levels... Maybe 50 shops total.  There are other off chutes of the mall with other shops and restaurants. There are metal detectors and armed guards at every entrance. Prices here are similar to prices in iowa.  The further into Manila we go, the less expensive things are.

Condo--
Our condo is 2 bedroom, 2 and a half bath. Its fairly small. about 750 square feet Id guess. but its home. Vinny likes it. We are on 7th floor.  5th floor has a walking are for Vin and the pool and workout area. I havent been able to try the pool yet as it has rained 23 straight days.  The staff here is great, but speak limited English, and that has been a challenge.

Language barriers--
Suzy had told me before we left that most all people spoke English and people could use dollars as payment.  Based on that I didn't study my Tagalog too hard.  I should have. Very few people speak English outside of "GOOD MORNING, SIRRRR" Dollars are not accepted. Everything is in Philippine Pesos. I am trying to get out as much as possible to interact and try to pick up on things.

Banks--
Checking accounts take 6 months to set up. Savings accounts are easy.  However, I cannot take a check from the US and deposit it into a Philippine account. That is a separate type of account. There are tons of rules and everything is still old school. paper work on everything. nothing electronic really. Guards at the bank we go to let you in then lock the door behind.

Restaurants--
Plenty of good eating, unless one is wanting real American food.  Nothing close to a Jethro's here.  Some places that are close to an American feel like Johnny Rocketts are WAY expensive. About 10 bucks for a burger and fries.  They do dance often at Johnny Rocketts and play a great sel;ection of 70s and 80s songs so I do like walking by there.  McDonald's has a few options.  They offer McDelivery. They use the metric system here, but still offer the quarter pounder with cheese.  They also offer fries called the Mcshaker fries. Basically, your fries come ina bag and they give you a powdered cheese thats like what you use for mac and cheese to pour on top and shake.  They also have sour cream and chive flavor.  There is fried chicken called the McDo. it comes with rice or spaghetti.  At other restaurants-- there is a huge rush to get your order. They get that in, and then getting service after food arrives is almost non existent. It is very hard to get attention from servers even to get a check to pay the bill. That is weird not having someone saying "how is your meal?"  The Friday's here is one exception.

Food markets--
On Thursday and Friday nights there is a food vendor area set up in the courtyard. Grilled squid and chicken intestines is as crazy as Ive gotten so far.  There is a dude who yells "U.S. Roast Beeeeeef. U.S. Turkeyyyyyyyyy"  and maybe I will try that someday, just trying to be more adventurous.

Shoes and clothes--
It is tough being a bigger guy with big feet. The largest shoe size is 10 or so for guys around here. Clothing? Ha... havent found a waist size over 36.

Taxis--
Taxis are an adventure-- some speak English, most are limited. The cost isn't too bad, the cost equivalent is like 4 bucks for about a 15 or 20 minute ride.  Traffic is an issue, and gets worse when it rains... which right now is often

Weather--
This is the rainy season. There is rain daily which ranges from drizzle to tropical storm style downpours.  We have another month or so of this before things start drying out for a few months.  January and February there is literally no rain. Looking forward to that.

Jobs--
Suzy was able to start less than a week after getting here. We are still working on my visa to get my job situation going.  I am working with Wells Fargo Solutions here to get squared away but the process takes time and the pace of life is much slower here.  Suzy is working nights and I sure hope to also get on at night so I will actually see her.

TV--
We get 80 channels on cable. There are about 20 that apply.  The mainstays for us is Bio, History, and Crime and investigation. There is also HBO and NBATV but not a lot else-- cnn and fox news do keep us in tune with US news. The New "seasons" of shows like Duck Dynasty are actually shows from last year.  The schedule seems to run 6 months behind.  I did see that the new Survivor was on Sunday here so I am looking forward to at least watching that. American Pickers is just called "The Pickers" but its nice to see familiar faces.  Its only like 12 buck U.S. for monthly service so that isnt bad.

Phone and internet--
Landline and DSL is approximately $40 U.S. and is limited to 15GB of usage monthly.  Cell phones were an adventure. We bought a phone each and then had to get a pre paid Sim card as the Cell service company wants 2 months residency at a minimum. so all of that is temporary.  My cell service is unlimited for people with the same company but since I know no one else-- that is moot.

What Ive learned so far--
Patience. the pace here, although bustling, is slow. People are not in a hurry.  I have to get used to that. In America, it becomes customary to demand get things quickly. Not the case here. People are friendly, but quite shy. not too many want to open up.  At times being away from home has been depressing. it is quite a change. On the other hand-- I have to remember that I am in the middle of an area where people eek out an existence trying to make a few pesos before sleeping under an overpass. Life is still good and its important to give thanks.  I wouldn't trade this experience for anything and it will make me a much stronger person.

More to come-- especially details of day to day here in the big city-- questions? let me know!

Moving to the Philippines, Chapter 1

June 16, 2013

Yes, it is true.  Suzy and I will be moving to the Manila, Philippines area sometime mid to late August, 2013.  In two months, we will be looking to pack our belongings, sell our vehicles, do some things for the last time in awhile, say our goodbyes for now, and rent our house (amongst everything else).  Suzy has accepted a once in a lifetime opportunity to relocate for 1-2 years to manage the quality assurance operations for all of her employer's call centers in the Philippines.  It has been a year since my "40 til 40" series on here. I figured time to fire the blog up and tell some stories, explain our journey and by then it will be time to go and then I will have a whole new set of things to talk about.

It was January or February when Suzy first floated the idea but it really hasn't been official until just now.  Doesn't leave a lot of time, but who am I kidding... I would be procrastinating anyway.  The first time it was mentioned I will always remember.  First, I thought it was a joke.  Second, before I even knew the destination, I figured it was somewhere stateside.  That was a negatory, good buddy.  Suzy asked my opinion and it has always been this, "I am behind you 100 %.  It is your decision and choice to make.  I will follow whichever path. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

So, the fun begins now.  We have already had a garage sale.  We have a storage shed rented. Now if I could learn magic and have these things transport themselves to it.  We have a plan and the key now is sticking to it... Time is ticking.

A few things I will be doing before the move? One, the necessary trip to the doctor for the round of shots and immunizations.  But on to the fun stuff.  July 14 I will be running a 5k at Principal Park, home of the Iowa Cubs.  I won't be registered for the 1st time ever at the State Fair 5K in November, so this is what I will do in its place.  Did someone say State fair?  Yes I have tickets already for that and I will be going.  Blue Oyster Cult concert night is August 8. I am in.  I have tickets  still for Iowa Cubs games so I am sure to hit a couple of those.  Sprinkled in will be as much time with friends and family as I can spare.  A July trip to see both my folks and Suzy's family will happen.  Might even catch a Cubs game while in Colorado.  We are taking our youngest dog Vinny, with us, but Lacey, who is about 15, will be staying with Suzy's folks during our absence.  So on the way to Colorado, she will be dropped off and Vinny will get about a month of freedom here in Ankeny before we pack him up in a doggie backpack and stow him under a seat for 20 hours of air travel.

Philippine time is 13 hours AHEAD.  So it will already be Friday there for a long time before it is Friday here.  Sunday football here I will get to watch at 1 Am on Sunday morning.  Awesome.  We will be renting in the Philippines and hope to get at least a 2 BR, 2 BA place.  3 BR would be sweet as we hope at some point to entertain people travelling to see us.  That will happen after we get there most likely, so I can't wait to spend some of the first days in Manila in a hotel.  From what I can tell, there is no organized roller derby in Manila, which sucks.  I will just have to find something else.

In future chapters,  I will address a plethora of topics such as things I think I will miss stateside, what plans for fun we have over there, What will I do for sports to follow, as well as updating on how the preparations are evolving.  As always, I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my blogs (past or present) and I will be happy to answer any questions people have for us.

Chapter one is in the books! Two months to go until we are on a jet plane!

Recap: Iowa Escapes Soldier Field 18-17

The new monsters of the Midway? ummm no.  A win is a win is a win? Yes. The Hawkeyes faced a game Northern Illinois Huskies squad and were able to leave with n 18-17 decision.

Damon Bullock's 23 yard scamper on 3rd and 8 with 2:15 remaining provided the winning points for Iowa (1-0). NIU (0-1) had played a Norm Parkeresque bend but no break defense only allowing 4 Mike Meyer field goals before the Bullock run.

Time to look at the positives and negatives of this game.

Areas needing improvement

There were some differences in the O and D under new coordinators Greg Davis and Phil Parker. There will also be some growing pains.  To play devil's advocate, though, the rub against old coordinators Norm and Ken was predictability. Maybe Greg Davis wants to save a couple wrinkles for ISU, but this offense had patterns of their own until the 2:15 mark. Running the ball was solid. Then Iowa decided to go with a steady diet of failed play action on 1st down, incomplete pass on 2nd down, followed by sack for loss on 3rd down. Not having the benefit to see the game live or a wider view of the pass patterns, it seemed as not a lot was vertical. It seemed to be a lot of West Coast.  Maybe that is a product of the WR not getting open. Maybe its design. third down efficiency lacked because of it. Things to work on in practice.

The defense played with an edge. I am not going to nitpick on their efforts.

Special Teams saved the day as well. I would like, however, Mike Meyer to look a little more confident when kicking field goals. He looks like a deer in headlights as he is lining it up.

Areas needing Praise

Greg Davis answered my plea to run off tackle on the final TD drive on first down.  It went for no gain.  2nd down wasn't much better leaving 3rd and 8. Davis was aware of NIU and their blitzing on 3rd down as he went totally off script and back to off tackle for the game winner.  That was a breath of fresh air and it paid off.

Against mainly MAC opponents, NIU did average 476 yards a game last year. No matter who, that is a lot.  They gained a grand total of 201 Saturday. 73 of course came on one scamper. And although Jordan Lynch outran everyone and that is a little disconcerting, the defense played well. KUDOS. Phil Parker is playing a little tougher up front and going away from the ol bend don't break. I like it. Mike Meyer, he of the fear instilling institute, did do a good job connecting on 4-5 fg attempts. Micah Hyde and greg garmon were solid in returning kicks. Connor kornbrath was great in his debut and Wienke added a 43 yard punt. Greg Castillo of course had the save of the game, pinning NIU at the 1. Special teams gets a gold star.

Damon Bullock made the most of his opportunity. Keep him healthy!

So, Iowa wins 18-17. Vandenberg gets a road win to start off the season.  Iowa State awaits at Kinnick, 2:30 next Saturday. If Iowa is going to go to 2-0. . . they need to keep the defense rolling, fine tune the offense and score more touchdowns than field goals.  We will talk more about this during the week in our Vlog.

Week one, much like week one in 2009, took a fantastic finish, but came out a W.  Here is to 2012. 1-0
Next weeks ISU-Iowa recap will come on Sunday next week.

Iowa Hawkeye preview-- 2012

When we last left the Iowa Hawkeyes, they were leaving Arizona after a 31-14 loss to Oklahoma in the Insight Bowl and we saw Marvin McNutt narrowly escape a way ward ESPN Camera. Eight months later, The Hawkeyes are minus the graduated McNutt, both top coordinators and some more running backs (SHOCKER).  For the Hawkeyes to top last year's season, they need to overcome the loss of the graduates, transfers and coaches. Can they? Yes. As we have seen in the past, when not much is expected of the Hawks, they can surprise. That and a schedule designed for them is key to the resurgence.

Now, this could still work out like the 2007 season, when a young team got spanked by Indiana and got field goaled to death by Iowa State and had their bowl hopes dashed by Western Michigan at home no less.  With the pressure on Coach Ferentz and the coaching staff I do not see a repeat.  let's take a look at the hawks and then breakdown their schedule.

Offense (new offensive coordinator Greg Davis)

QB:

The key to success this season may be the defense as a whole stopping some teams, but number two then is James Vandenberg. Vandenberg has the tools, the experience and the confidence in himself. What he lacks are tested running backs, a do-everything wide receiver, and a shutdown defense.  Vandenberg only has 4 road games this year, which is key since he has only one road win on his record (Purdue).  Vandenberg will flourish in greg Davis's system. Will it make him Colt McCoy? maybe not, but maybe Major Applewhite. I expect big things from James VB.

RB:

NEXT! All kidding, conspiracy theories and AIRBHG aside, in the Greg Davis system, this just needs to be serviceable. . . Freshman Barkley Hill went down at the end of the last Saturday practice. he is out.  DeAndre Johnson got kicked off after multiple infractions. He is out. Damon Bullock has 20 career rushing yards. he leads the pack. I like Greg Garmon. Yes this is steep praise, but he reminds me of a young Eric Dickerson. He does run high and he is thin, but elusive. Garmon must stay healthy.  At a minimum think young Sedrick Shaw. Highlight time.  Michael Malloy also backs this position up. At Fulback, youth also reigns with Mark Weisman and Brad Rogers.

Ends and Receivers:

More reason for optimism. Yes, McNutt is gone. But now is the time for Keenan Davis.  Keenan Davis has all the talent; can he make the next step? Especially, considering teams will look to double him. In the Greg Davis davis scheme, look for multiple looks to get the ball in his hands or to look to the capable Kevonte Martin-Manley. Devote all the coverage to the outside? The Vandenberg will have my choice as All Big Ten candidate CJ Fiedorowicz running the seams making a mismatch of linebacker and safety.  This is a strength.

OL:

Reilly Reiff is gone. Adam Gettis also was drafted.  Iowa, though for what seems is the 15th straight year, has a Ferentz on the line. James Ferentz anchors this group. He is tutored by his bro, Brian.  I am not as worried about the OL as they can come together and if Iowa does use a Texas style of more shotgun and quick hitting plays, they will not be as dependent on long sustained blocks.

Kicking game:

As of press time, the Punter for herky's crew is Freshman Connor Kornbrath. John Wienke who had been a backup QB and did punt in high school is the backup.  Yeah this could be an issue.  I have never been a big fan of Mike Meyer as a placekicker, but one could do worse. He is at a 70 percent clip. He can kick with some distance. Serviceable will work.

DEFENSE (New defensive coordinator Phil Parker)

DL:  OH BOY. . . Its Young up the middle with Carl Davis and Louis Trinca-Pasat. Davis has been hassled with injuries. His stepping up and into the hole is going to be paramount.  The line will be a rotation, to keep everyone fresh and Steve Bigach, Dominic Alvis, and Joe Gaglione will be counted on to hold their spots down.

LB:  This may be the busiest position on the team. Christian Kirksey, Anthony Hitchens and personal fave James Morris will have their hands full. This is the year where Morris shows all of his talent.  The D will ride on his health.

DB:  Micah Hyde! LB may be the busiest, DB will be the most exciting. BJ lowery is good. Tom Donatell and Tanner Miller are good at safety, and my sleeper pick for breakout star this year is Nico Law. Last year I whiffed with M'Kail Mccall, he of the first game injury then getting himself booted before leaving.  Nico Law will bring back memories of Bob Sanders. He will be fun to watch.  I think Hyde takes things to the next level and is definitely all B1G.

Return game:

Just don't fumble. I wish it wasn't such valuable performers as Hyde, Martin-manley and Bullock, but they will provide workmanlike performances.

Coaching:

Sure, there are new coordinators, but they are still under the reins and reign of Kirk Ferentz. Things do need to be a little less stodgy if Iowa plans to compete on both sides of the ball. A little unpredictability would be nice even if it is replacing draw plays with bubble screens.

Predictions:

9/1-- Northern Illinois . . . Iowa 37 Northern Illinois 33  Lots of growing pains in this one, but a win is a win is a win at Kinnick East. The fans help the Hawks take this one.

9/8-- Iowa State . . . Iowa 23 Iowa State 20  ISU keeps this one close and makes it a game at the end, but Iowa holds on. Bring on the CyHawk Trophy!

9/15-- Northern Iowa . . . Iowa 38 Northern Iowa 20  UNI fans keep frothing about an upset. Not in week 3. Not at Iowa. Not after just playing ISU. if I am wrong, I will be happy to admit it and will don an UNI cap for a day. I am not worried. Iowa has too much on offense for UNI.

9/22-- Central Michigan . . . Iowa 34 Central Michigan 20 Well if this was CM of a few years ago with Dan Lefevour and Antonio brown Iowa would be in trouble. This is a veteran team, but of the 3-9 variety. Still should be entertaining.

9/29-- Minnesota. . .  Iowa 24 Minnesota 17 Watch out for the ONSIDE KICK! I will be glad to see Shoelace lite (Marqueis Gray) finally graduate. I hope Iowa wins by 40 in this, but I think it will be close.

10/13--  at Michigan State. . . Michigan State 30 Iowa 28  Iowa has the easy schedule year and if they wanted a 2009esque year this is a must win. I see a valiant effort falling short as one of Mike Meyers missed field goals on the year costs the Hawks. Win this and the Hawks may be undefeated until the next time they are in Michigan.

10/20-- Penn State. . . Iowa 17 Penn State 10 Say what you want about the Nittany Lions. They will play hard each week. Iowa has to reach deep to become bowl eligible.

10/27-- at Northwestern. . . Iowa 27 Northwestern 21 Another game that will not be a cake walk. Of course coach pat circles this one on the calendar each year. Iowa goes in and gets out of there . . . for a change with a W.

11/3-- at Indiana. . . Iowa 44 Indiana 19 Another week to get the team clicking. Hopefully the offense can put up some numbers. A big week for CJ is my thought.

11/10-- Purdue. . . Iowa 37 Purdue 13 This one will get the Hawk fans really clamoring about Bowl destinations.

11/17-- at Michigan. . . Michigan 31 Iowa 21 Shoelace! Revenge is on the mind of the Wolverines and they deliver in the Big House.

11/23--Nebraska. . . Nebraska 27 Iowa 20 Black Friday and just can't score enough against the Black shirts

1/1/13-- Auburn in the Gator Bowl.  Iowa 33 Auburn 30 (OT) I hate to agree with the Register's Randy Peterson, but this is a juicy matchup against Chizik and Iowa would be in a better bowl if they can beat Michigan, Mich. st. or the Huskers. They probably won't so its off to the gator bowl.

Iowa 10-3. If this happens, look for big expectations for 2013, even if it does mean Cody Sokol or Jake Rudock at QB.

40 til 40 June 10, 2012 "THE FINALE"

Wow. Can't believe the time is here. Tuesday, June 12, is the day. WOW.

Thank you all for reading, commenting, sharing and being a part of my life as we approach 40 years on earth.  Who knew I would get almost 2,000 hits in over a month of stories.

I have had so many experiences and I couldn't have had them without all of you and really have enjoyed sharing.

I hope I get to do a 50 til 50 and so on. Not sure if I am halfway home in my journey or over halfway home. I just know that I will continue living each day as I always have. Turning over every rock. making sure if there is an experience I want to pursue, I do.

Tomorrow, I get to have my "so you are turning 40 physical." I promised my Dad I would have the prostate test. His Dad, my Grandfather had Prostate cancer so it is a worry in the family, but if My Dad doesn't have it yet, then I may be ok for awhile. Never hurts to check. "MOON RIVERRRRR!"

I will make sure I spend time with all of my family and friends. You all are soooo important to me.

I will still run 5K races. I am not sure I will ever do an 8k again.  not really built for that or longer. My team at work is going to do one in October, I will do the State Fair 5K in November. My goal is to run my age.

I will still do standup comedy. Sure my shows have declined more to corporate gigs the last couple years, but I have some great gigs coming up this summer and I am reinvigorated. If there was only more time in the day.

I will continue announcing roller derby.  Hells Yes! I love Roller Derby and all of the friends it has introduced me too. Mid-Iowa Rollers are currently 7-0. I wish I was going to be there next week in KC as they take on the KC roller warriors. You bet though I will be there for regionals and beyond!

Service work will continue.  Giving back to those who need help is a huge priority.

So, there we go.  Hey all, please be well. Do well. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart. You all have shaped my life.

Here is to the next 40!

CHUCK U.

40 til 40 June 9, 2012 "Chicago Blackhawks"

2 years ago... The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. The first one in my lifetime.  Maybe the last.  I had a ticket to game 7 at Chicago. some people were bummed I didn't get to go. I am not. I am glad they won! One never knows with my luck going to sporting events.

Like most of my team allegiances, I was born into it. My Grandparents were Blackhawk fans and attended games. TV access to the Hawks in Iowa was nil until cable for a long time. Thanks Wirtz family.

But like a lot of Blackhawks fans, Denis Savard was my favorite. the guy was the man. the Spinorama!

My dad got me a hockey stick when I was 8ish. I would try to emulate the Spinorama. I wasn't as good.

My five favorite moments as a Blackhawks fan.

5. Detroit SUCKS!  My first Blackhawks game in person was January 05, 2003. The Blackhawks were winning a defensive struggle against the Wings 3-1 I think late in the 3rd.  Then My favorite Hawk at the time Bob Probert started a Detroit Sucks cheer. Next thing I know The Wings won 4-3 in ot.  the sights, sounds, smells and excitement of my first game at the UC was awesome!

4. The press conference.  I am lucky enough to have a friend on the inside, Adam Kempenaar. He has allowed me access to see my favorite hockey announcer, Gary Thorne and a great moment after the Blackhawks lost in 2007 at home to the Wild. I got to hang out and be a dude at the Press conference. Denis Savard, my man was the coach at the time. It was an awesome moment.

3. The Blackhawks convention 2010. A month after winning the cup, We went to the Chicago Hilton for the convention. (Thanks again, Adam) Seeing Steve Larmer, meeting Tony Esposito was classic. The buzz was immense.

2. The Blackhawks win! Patty Kane, sneaking in the Game 6 winner set off a wild celebration in the Utech house. Granted I was delayed 5 seconds knowing if it was in!  What a great feeling. Again, who knows if they will ever get there again. I will always cherish that.

1.  The Winter Classic... 2009. Sure Detroit beat Chicago again. But Suzy went with me (awesome) Blackhawks hockey on New Year's Day (Awesome) and it was at Wrigley (Trifecta). It was a little cold, but nothing that warming up downtown with some Dunkin Donuts coffee and then a Mid Villa Pizza couldn't cure.  Wonderful memories

I hope the Blackhawks in the future just make some goaltending changes. I doubt they will, but although I was a huge Corey Crawford supporter, I am ready for him to be done. Maybe I am wrong and it will be another stanley cup in 2013!
